Migrant Farmers

Tomas and the Library Lady by Pat Mora, illustrated by Raul Colon, 1997.

This picture book is about Tomas Rivera who grew up in a migrant working family who went on to eventually become the Chancellor of the University of California at Riverdale.

The book lightly describes the work of a migrant family, and when they needed some shade, their grandfather told stories. Papa Grande encouraged Tomas to go to the library where he met the library lady who opened up the world of imagination through hundreds of books a a glass of cold water.

Eventually, Tomas had to return to Texas with his family after the season was over, but the inspiration he received from the library lady opened up a new world for Tomas.

He learned to value education so much that he became a national education leader.

I love how much you value reading and education, honey. We are going to be great homeschoolers together! :)
