Groundhog Day!

"Groundhog Day!" by Gail Gibbons

Like all of Gibbons' holiday-themed books, this is a keeper! This book gives the historical background about the holiday, information about Punxsutawney Phil and Cobbler's Knob, as well as lots of information about groundhogs as animals.

"People had always thought that they could predict when spring would come by watching animals. They believed that if a hibernating animal awoke from its sleep in the beginning of February and saw its shadow, there would be several more weeks of winter. If they animal didn't see its shadow, spring would come soon. They watched animals such as hedgehogs, bears, and badgers."
There are many holiday-themed books on the market, but few books explain the holiday in such an appealing, factual way for young children. It is a wonderful combination of fact and fun.
