WTM Homeschooling Grade 2: Science - Astronomy

Susan Wise Bauer's The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home suggests teaching Astronomy and Earth Science in second grade. Instead of using standard science textbooks, there are many great picture books which cover the topics that are age-appropriate for second graders. Additionally, Janice VanCleave's science experiment books can help with hands-on learning and allow for "picking and choosing" your experiments.

Here is the list of picture books and experiment books shown in the picture above:

1. Janice VanCleave's Astronomy for Every Kid
2. Galaxies, Galaxies! by Gail Gibbons
3. The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons
4. The Big Dipper by Franklyn M. Branley
5. Janice VanCleave's Constellations for Every Kid
6. Planet Earth/ Inside Out by Gail Gibbons
7. Sunshine Makes the Seasons by Franklyn M. Branley
8. What Makes Day and Night by Franklyn M. Branley
9. The Planets by Gail Gibbons
10. The Moon Seems to Change by Franklyn M. Branley
11. Star Gazers by Gail Gibbons

Using the non-textbook approach is not as difficult as it may seem once you have chosen your resources. There are so many wonderful science picture books available for children that essentially do the teaching for you.
