Creature Count: A Prehistoric Rhyme

"Creature Count: A Prehistoric Rhyme" by Brenda Huante

If you are familiar with the rhyme Over in the Meadow, you will easily pick up the tempo in this picture book. If you are not familiar with it, don't worry, you will figure it out as you continue reading.

"Near a prehistoric beach by the foamy green sea, Lived a mother saber-tooth and her toothy kittens three. 'Snarl!' said the mother. 'We snarl!' said the three. So they snarled and they hissed by the foamy green sea."

I love this book because it is a perfect preschool-age picture book about dinosaurs. So many preschool-age children love dinosaurs, but there are many dinosaur books that are either overly fact-filled or scary. This book uses mother dinosaurs and their babies to count to ten in a very simplistic way.

"In a prehistoric wood where the trees reach to heaven, Lived a mom apatosaur and her little long-necks seven. 'Stretch!' said the mother. 'We stretch!' said the seven. So they stretched as they nibbled on the trees that reached to heaven."

I think you will love it and so will the kids!
