Let's Go Rock Collecting

Let's Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans is a Let's Read-and-Find-Out Science Level 2 picture book.

First of all the title is enticing isn't it? It sets you up from the beginning to want to start a rock collection as soon as you begin reading this book.

This is an introductory book about geology for elementary age students. There are photographs of granite, quartz, basalt, talc, gypsum and many more rocks. It shows Mohs' Scale of Hardness and explains how talc, for example, is soft enough for you to crush in your hands.

"Another sedimentary rock is limestone. It is made of the shells of animals that lived millions of years ago. Most often, limestone is white. But it can be pink, tan, and other colors. Sometimes you can see the outlines of shells in limestone."

At the end of the book, it suggests to the reader that one way to begin a collection is by looking for rocks that are different colors and then shows examples of how to store and sort the rocks.
