Rocks-Earth Science

Rocks, Hard, Soft, Smooth and Rough” by Natalie M. Rosinsky

Help your child start a rock collection or just go out and gather some rocks to compare. Then read this book with your child and see if you can identify some of those rocks as well as compare and contrast the differences between them.
This picture book is a great introduction to geology. It covers igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. There is also a chart in the back about the Mohs Hardness Scale.
“You might see specks or larger stripes of different colors in your rock. These specks and stripes are different kinds of minerals. Minerals are the basic building blocks of rocks. Rubies and diamonds are minerals. People carve them into gems that sparkle in necklaces and rings.”
There are also Fun Facts on every other page such as:

“In cliffs and canyons, you can sometimes see different layers of sediment. Some layers are as tall as skyscrapers.”
