National Ice Cream Month

July is National Ice Cream Month, and specifically, the third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day.

As usual, my go-to non-fiction picture book author, Gail Gibbons, has the perfect book about ice cream. Ice Cream: The Full Scoop explains the history behind ice cream and how it is made. 

 "About 700 years ago a famous Italian trader, Marco Polo, came home from China bringing recipes for flavored ices. Chefs for European royalty experimented with new combinations of icy treats. Finally cream was added, and there was a new dessert we now call "ice cream"."

Another great book is a Level 1 Penguin Young Reader called Ice Cream Soup by Ann Ingalls, 2013. The young boy in the story has the idea to make an ice cream cake. He adds more and more ice cream and toppings. By the end, the ice cream has melted, and it looks more like soup then cake!

"There is more room. I don't won't to stop. I can put something else on top."

After reading either of these two books, there is no doubt, your child will be begging for ice cream!
